What We Do
Overall, KPLF works to support and strengthen Kingston Public Library services, programs and technology by raising funds and awareness to address the Library’s needs.
Since our founding in 2009, the funds raised by KPLF have paid for a variety of engaging and enriching programs, including art for youth and adults, special storytimes, music circles, resume and interviewing workshops, news literacy and much more.
Our history is also rooted in supplementing the book budget during times of economic uncertainty for the town, which has enabled the Library to retain its critical State Accreditation.
Recent Accomplishments
Children's Room
In 2020, during the building’s closure due to the pandemic, KPLF spearheaded and funded the renovation of the Children’s Room. For the first time in decades, this space that sees very high traffic on a regular basis from our youngest patrons, was given colorful new furniture, a fresh coat of paint, and new sensory activity tables for kids and their caregivers to enjoy.
The Sia Stewart Staff Scholarship Fund
Also in 2020, KPLF proudly announced the creation of the Sia Stewart Staff Scholarship Fund, which provides funds to library staff to continue their professional development through coursework, conferences and workshops.
Teen Room
Other recent accomplishments include providing updated technologies for the new Teen Room. The Teen Room has seen a high number of visitors since it opened in 2021 and we funded the purchase of some of today’s technology to keep our teens engaged in learning and creativity with modern resources.
Library of Things
We are also proud of our “Library of Things,” introduced in 2019. This collection of unique household items, games, tools and recreation products is perfect for borrowing to help you meet occasional needs while avoiding an expensive purchase. From corn hole sets, giant Jenga, board games and a bubble machine to a label maker, stud finder, metal detector, LCD projector and much more, you’re bound to find something useful in our Library of Things!
Advocacy
Another important aspect of KPLF’s work is publicly advocating for town support of the Library and encouraging residents to attend Town Meeting to vote in favor of articles that will support the Library’s budget, staff, strategic goals and resources. We welcome all residents to help spread the word through letter/email writing or sharing information on social media when important decisions need to be made by local leaders or the Town Meeting body.
